Pigletta’s Purple Haze. It’s more than just a little bit of nice alliteration. For those who don’t know, Pigletta was our original farm friend, a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig who became our mascot. Sadly she wasn’t with us on this earth for too many years, but she was a sweetheart whose presence and memory we hold dearly. So with the naming of this farm-raised strain, we wanted to honour our little oinky friend who was there to brighten the sometimes dark days of the initial tough years at Mephisto HQ.

Pigletta’s Purple Haze was a previously archived project from amongst our last cycles of breeding rounds at the original farm. Those final breeding rounds included the now-released Walter White BX1 and a few currently unreleased photo-auto projects that still haven’t seen the light of day. We always make more project crosses than projects we release. Some get shelved for a rainy day or until we fancy dipping into the project seed stash again.

When we first emigrated to Spain, we’d already amassed a sizeable, stacked seed collection ready to sift through and sink our teeth into. Amongst this was a whole load of early Rare Dankness gear that we meticulously hunted through to find some of the most fire strains around at the time. After the exceptional results from the first Rare Dankness-based project, Fantasmo Express, we delved back in to look for nice candidates that would lend well to another newly developed Mephisto Genetics strain, Northern Cheese Haze.

Before we jump into our project to create Pigletta’s Purple Haze, let’s take a quick look at how Rare Dankess describe their now-retired Purple Haze:

This purple beauty is a great yielding strain, with a skunky smell and grape flavour. This is absolutely an amazing purple cross. Over 50% of flowers will exhibit purple colourisation.

Some teenage nostalgia was definitely present when selecting Purple Haze to work into autoflowering form. Purple Haze was a classic, almost mythical strain from our youth that we had longed to sample, and it shares its name with one of Tim’s favourite songs of all time.

The project began on June 5th 2017, with the Purple Haze #2 beans from Rare Dankess sowed. This began a long conversion project from photoperiod to autoflower, taking 7 years and various trials and tribulations to bring us up to today. At the time we were going down the line of thought to double down on an old-school classic/haze-influenced sativa to add to the catalogue. We had already created Fantasmo Express, a newer school strain, but we were after classic flavours, structures and effects reminiscent of our teenage years and first high-grade tokes, and Old School Mango Haze and Old School Blues were not in development until the following year.

Selections were made in line with our Spanish farm process, we made two selections at F0 Purple haze #2 x NCH, one was a slightly broader leaved indica, and one was much more sativa, at F1 we grew out around 50 from the more sativa dominant line. One intrinsic trait we saw and loved was that despite sexing early they flowered whilst putting on size rapidly. At F2 we started 100 plants to arrive at 25 males and females combined and found 5 females that represented exactly what we were after, the next generations were just to refine and lock in the-little-sativa-that-could phenotypes.

So crank the amp, rip out the 7#9s and get some Purple Haze all in your brain.

Let’s pass this one over to our own Jimbo, and let him tell you all about his experience with Pigletta’s Purple Haze.

Pigletta’s Purple Haze clocks in as our second tester review and this one was something special! She turned out squat, chunky, and bursting with cheesy/hazey/gassy goodness. With floppy laterals, a UNIT of a main cola, and beefy frosted nugs coated in fire-red pistils, this one may just be the star of the tent!

Pigletta’s early structure in veg sported long soft serrated fan leaves with sharp tips and a healthy vibrant green hue. A mild early feeder, by D25 she was beginning her meristem stretch, a brief burst of growth which would level off before her bloom cycle.

Pigletta’s started flowering in the late D20’s, developing a rapid set of pompoms stacked tightly all of the way down the main stem. Her lateral branches packed on quickly to follow. As her short frame continued into the bulking phase, her tiny branches became over-encumbered and required support ties. (A Mephisto pro-tip would be to consider staking/support netting or making a cage as the branches really do get overloaded with flowers). By the end of flower, her massive main cola even required support.

For a smaller/mid-sized plant, this girl made up for it in weight with a solid collection of frosted buds. Almost every branch was bucked down to individual nugs before being jarred and bagged. Trimming was easy, as her foliage was minimal coming out of senescence. She left us with frosted fluffy nugs brushed with sticky trichomes tucked behind a blanket of apricot pistils.

Pigletta’s Purple Haze produced a clear-headed, energetic, and mood-enhancing high that soars. Post-grind aromatics are savoury and complex with a salty and nutty cheese funk that is followed by velvety gassy undertones, almost like Parmesan doused in Diesel fuel. She gives thickly milky clouds with hazy, floral aromas and a whizzing head rush that mellows out into a cerebral lucid dream state-style buzz.

Great for a mid-morning to afternoon puff. Pigletta’s Purple Haze has legs, but won’t run you too hard. She’s great at giving you that much-needed pick-me-up. This one’s a perfect grab for those looking for savoury terps that won’t put you to bed in the middle of the day. Get stoked for this girl when she rounds the corner, you won’t be disappointed!
